The pictures of M42 above were all taken on January 1, 2008 using a 10” LX200 Classic and an SBIG ST-7XE camera. The left image is taken with a hydrogen alpha filter. The center image is through an O III filter. A third image (not shown) was taken through a Sulfur filter but only the stars are visible through that filter. Assigning red, green and blue to the three images and letting Photoshop perform color correction resulted in the image on the right. Images and processing by Paul Kohlmiller.
